Q:

We are currently using a very old version of DBMS and experiencing a problem with our current online backup feature.  Do you know why?

A:

Yes, a problem has been discovered on the online backup feature of DBMS v4.3. In some situations, the use of DBO/BACKUP/ONLINE (without the /MULTITHREADED qualifier) may create an invalid backup file. If a database is restored form this backup, it is possible that the resulting database will contain some corruption. Note: this alert does not apply if you are using the /MULTITHREADED backup feature. *Digital had a mandatory update to resolve this problem on February 5, 1993. If you are using on ONLINE backup features of version 4.3, then you must install this update immediately. If you are running v4.3, and you are not able to immediately apply this mandatory update, then you should change your DBO/BACKUP routines to use the /MULTITHREADED feature or remove the /ONLINE qualifier. Failure to do so may result in an unusable database backup. Better yet, consider upgrading to a more recent release (v4.3 was released in June 1992).

*Note:  Oracle purchased the Rdb family of products, including DBMS, from Digital in 1995.
