Q:

We are currently on DBMS v4.3. What is the most recent version of DBMS and what versions are supported?

A:

While v7.2.2.0 represents the most current version of DBMS, Oracle only supports the following prior releases of DBMS (SCI supports all versions of DBMS - including v4.3):

  • v7.0.5
  • v7.1.0.2

There is really no excuse for being on a release of DBMS prior to v4.3. Versions 4.3 to v5.1 offer similar functionality, and SCI recommends v5.1 over v4.3. Version 6.0 contains significant changes over v5.1. Version 7.0.3 has significant improvements over previous versions. The biggest of which is the online restructure feature. Version 7.0.4 had some potentially serious flaws that have been corrected in 7.0.4-2.

If you are experiencing problems, it is important to verify that you are on the current revision level (letter identifier) of your specific version (i.e. v7.0.4-2 versus 7.0). Revision level updates are often Mandatory Updates (MUPs), which is an euphemism for "it fixes problems that could cause database corruption."

*Note:  Oracle purchased the Rdb family of products, including DBMS, from Digital in 1995.
